This week our teenagers are being challenged with a scene from one of Oscar Wilde's most popular plays "THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST". When the teens read through the scene I could see they were faced with a dilemma- they began to sweat as the vocabulary in "THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST" is extremely challenging and the sentence structure is not the normal way of speaking for all of us young folk; but the flow of the scene is wonderful and the play is so humorous that to not even try to perform the scene would be a crime :) and boy did they give it a great go! Who knew that teenagers living in 2013 with all the technology and social media manner of speech would be able to relate to a play that was first performed on 14 February 1895, that's 118 years ago to this day. Oscar Wilde must have been a genius to write a play that children living 118 years later would be able to 'get'. I'm loving the Helen O'Grady curriculum this term, it's soooo challenging but with the right methods of teaching the teenagers are just lapping it all up :)
